What’s your name, and where are you from?
I am Laura from Michigan.
How long have you been collecting?
Geez, for as long as I can remember! I don’t know if “collecting” is the right word to describe the passion I have for sneakers. I think I just admire what a shoe can transpire to be and how they can make you feel!
What inspired you to start collecting?
Growing up I was huge into sports (still am today). Basketball was a lifestyle in my household. My parents were beyond generous and I was always able to have shoes that matched my uniform or school colors. So many great legends helped make the sneaker culture what it is today; MJ, Pippen, Grant Hill (man those Fila’s were fire). So many brands at one point played such a huge role in my up brining that are now coming back, its wild. These so called “retros” or “grails” are shoes that I actually played in, and now kids I coach want them, its surreal.
What’s your favorite pair of sneakers that you own, and why?
Gosh, so many pairs to choose from! But if I had to pick one, right now, I think I would have to go with the OG “Chicago” 1’s. The 1’s are a limitless silhouette that keep getting remastered and remade with new textures and color combos. But the “Chicago’s”, I remember playing AAU basketball in and winning STATES. To me, it’s more than a lifestyle shoe, I actually played in them and people always looked at me like I was nuts.
What grail pair don’t you have and would love to add to your collection?
LOL I was little bummed during “Airmax Month” that I was not able to get the SW’s or the Animal Pack BUT if I had to add a pair, this may be shocking but I need the “BRED” 1’s. I was out of town when they came out in 2016 and I just simply forgot about the release (this still haunts me today)! Eventually, I will get there and pull the trigger on getting these.
What are your likes and/or dislikes about sneakerhead culture?
I love the community of the sneaker culture. Instagram can bring so many people together and make you feel like you’re not the only one who has this passion. A lot of my friends think I am insane for all the shoes that I have but when you find people who share the same passion as you do, it’s a really great feeling. This is going to sound nuts, but I love camping out for sneakers LOL. That in itself is a great experience.
The only thing I really dislike about the culture is that when I a “hype” shoe is getting released, random people come out of the woodwork or these so called “bots” and make hard for those who really want the shoe and care about the shoe. I have never sold a shoe, I have never hoarded a shoe, I wear them, and I enjoy them. The whole “re-selling” nature of the game can be a bit disheartening but hey, I guess its how some make a living.
Is there anything you’d like to see more of in the sneakerhead community?
I honestly would like to see more females praising females in the community. I think it’s really hard for some women to show love to other ladies in the game. Meaning, they want to be the “one” who is known. I think this culture needs more ladies in the game who genuinely love sneakers and not just the “Jordan’s”. There are also so many heavy hitters that are females who don’t get enough credit at all because they are female.
All “kicks” aside, what are your interests/passions/hobbies outside of sneakers?
I am an engineer for one of the “Big 3” automotive companies but in my spare time I am a high school basketball and softball coach.
